GA4 is brand new and doesn’t have the capabilities of the current version of Google Analytics called Universal Analytics (UA).
Google recommends you upgrade to GA4 so that you can start collecting data in your GA4 account, but also that you keep UA on your site as well.
Eventually, GA4 is going to be Google’s main focus and UA will be phased out. You will need to upgrade by then for sure.
